This thoughtfully crafted itinerary weaves through three captivating countries — Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina — offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and scenic roads. Originally designed for a group of our guests, the route turned out so inspiring that we couldn’t resist sharing it more widely.
The adventure begins in Montenegro, with a visit to the majestic Lovćen National Park and the winding Kotor Serpentine, revealing breathtaking views over the Bay of Kotor. From the charming streets of Kotor and Herceg Novi, the road leads to an overnight stay in the timeless city of Dubrovnik, Croatia — a UNESCO treasure perched above the Adriatic.
Following the dramatic Makarska coastline, the journey continues into Bosnia and Herzegovina. After crossing the tranquil waters of Lake Rama, you’ll arrive in Mostar, where the iconic Stari Most bridge arches gracefully over the Neretva River. The next day brings a ride through the wild beauty of Sutjeska National Park and along the emerald shores of Piva Lake, before entering Montenegro once again.
The route climbs into the rugged peaks of Durmitor National Park, passing through the striking Saddle Pass to reach Žabljak and the serene Black Lake. From there, the road winds through the Tara and Morača canyons, skims the edge of Skadar Lake, and follows the old panoramic road back to the coast. A final stop at the postcard-perfect islet of Sveti Stefan completes the loop, returning to Budva — and to where the journey began.
I do not recommend using this route during the peak tourist season (late June to early August). Firstly, Croatia is quite hot at this time of year, and secondly, you may spend a lot of time crossing borders in this heat. Overall, this route is ideal if you really want to visit Dubrovnik and experience some variety in a short period of time.
